COURSE DESCRIPTION
 
This course is offered to introduce, refresh, and enhance basic computer skills. The course prepares students to apply technology expertise in all of their school subjects.
 
ESSENTIAL STANDARDS AND SCOPE OF COURSE (varies depending on grade level)
 

• Expand keyboarding skills, using typing programs to reach class standard.
• Communicate an understanding of how a computer works.
• Develop a technical vocabulary.
• Demonstrate responsibility in equipment use and care.
• Organize files, save and print documents to multiple locations.
• Compose and edit documents using word processing tools.
• Enhance documents with layout strategies, graphics, and charts.
• Present data in a variety of graphical forms.
• Construct spreadsheets to perform numerical calculations.
• Apply strategies for navigating and finding information from the Internet.
• Access, analyze, and evaluate electronic information from a variety of sources.
• Retrieve, organize, and utilize downloaded documents and sources appropriately.
• Communicate the researched information in written format.
• Produce page layouts and creative projects using publishing and graphics software.
• Explore basic programming through visual coding languages.

 
GRADING POLICIES and ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS
 
Grades will be based on the percent of total points earned from class assignments, participation and effort. Letter grades will be based on the standard grading scale. Attendance and participation in class are essential. Participation includes being in class on time, taking part in class discussions, and working on assignments productively. Homework will rarely be assigned due to the hands-on nature of a lab course, making attendance and productive participation imperative. Students are responsible for obtaining their make-up work upon returning from an absence.
 
 
GRADING: Attendance and participation: 10%
                   Projects and assessments: 90%
 
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
Students at this age are naturally curious, enthusiastic, and energetic. A firm discipline policy therefore will be used to ensure classroom success for all students. Rules that are broken are
tempered with fair and appropriate consequences.  Students should: 
 

• Work quietly without disturbing others.
• Listen carefully and follow directions.
•  Use time wisely in class.
• Treat others as you want to be treated.

 
 
INTERNET USE
Controlled Internet access for educational purposes is available at Saint Mary School.  As with other forms of educational media available in our school, every reasonable effort is made to supervise and limit all children’s viewing to age-appropriate material that is consistent with Catholic teaching.  The rules are available on the policy subpages.
